DIESEL APPLICATIONS

The diesel engine is used wordwide for a wide range of applications, and the FairDiesel range of engine designs is well suited to the majority of these. Because of its high power to weight ratio, the range is especially suited to applications where weight is critical. Its exceptionally high torque which is achievable at relatively low speeds is also of benefit in those applications where torque as well as power is a concern.

Power Generation

In the field of power generation there are a number of applications to which diesel engines are suited. Whilst wide -scale generation has been the province of large coal-fired power stations, or, more recently, gas-turbine driven generators, diesel generators have traditionally fitted into the medium to small-scale end of the market. The high capital cost, due to the need for strong, and hence heavy casings, has mitigated against diesels, as have the uncompetitive thermal efficiency and poor emissions record.

With the advent of the FairDiesel two-stroke diesel engines, all this is changing, with better thermal cycles and combustion control, lower weight and hence cost.

The FairDiesel range of engine designs spans the range from the two-cylinder, 80mm bore, 120KW design to the 32-cylinder, 160mm bore 24MW concept. Increased output is achieved by adding cylinders to the basic two-cylinder design, and by increasing bore and stroke.-------------

Marine Applications

The FairDiesel engine is ideally suited to marine applications where its low profile,low vibration levels and high efficiency bring advantagesof greater living space, low noise and increased range over other prime movers.

      

Aviation Applications

The FairDiesel engine is particularly suited to aviation installations. Because of the high cost of aviation fuel (Avgas) diesel engines running on aviation kerosene (Avtur) are becoming increasingly used in General Aviation. Several diesel engines have entered the European market in the last few years, but because of the need for massive crankshafts and bearing housings these are heavy and expensive. The FairDiesel opposed-piston barrel engine is potentially much lighter in comparison and the patented drive system gives almost perfect balance and low vibration.
